About Kaidashi and our method

Kaidashi (買い出し, "going out to buy") is a map of otaku shops in Japan for collectors who travel: trading cards, figures, retro games, gachapon, manga and pop-up stores. It tells you where a shop is, on which floor, when it opens and what it is good for, in English, French and Japanese.

In figures, today

  • 2,250 shops with a full page
  • 0 verified on site
  • 5,265 more places found in open data, still to check
  • 125 vending machines (capsules, cards, figures)

Where the shops come from

  • Open data: Overture Maps Foundation places and All The Places, for the starting list of shops; OpenStreetMap for vending machines; the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan (出典:国土地理院) for the addresses OpenStreetMap does not know.
  • Official sources: each shop’s own website and the official store lists of the chains (for example Pokémon Center, Nintendo, Mandarake, Super Potato) and of buildings such as Akihabara Radio Kaikan.
  • People: our curators, and travellers who report a change from any shop page.
  • We do not copy data from map apps or review sites.

What each level means

To check
Found in open data. Shown on the map as a hollow pin, without a page: details may be missing or old.
Full page
Details read on the shop’s official page or an official list: name, floor, address, hours. The page says where each fact comes from and when it was read.
Verified
Someone went there. The page shows the verification seal (確) with its date. Only a visit gives this seal.

How pages stay current

  • The big names and key buildings are checked again against their official lists; closed or moved shops are hidden, not left on the map.
  • Any traveller can confirm a shop or report a change, without an account. Three independent reports of a closure within 30 days hide the shop until a curator checks it.
  • Shop pages say where their details come from and when they were read; verified shops show the date of the visit.

Guides

Guides are written from official sources, which are listed at the end of each guide, with a named author and the date of the last real update. A guide under review says so at the top until its facts are checked. Kaidashi · Guides

Independence

Kaidashi is independent. It is not affiliated with any brand, shop or chain, and no shop pays to appear or to rank higher. Brand names are used only to identify shops; we do not use their logos.

Report a mistake

Every shop page has a "report a change" box. For anything else about your data, see the privacy page.
