Godzilla: the real places
Godzilla came ashore in 1954 and has been flattening the same few streets ever since, which is why Tokyo is the one city where the film's locations and the film's monuments are the same walk. Toho publishes its own Godzilla map of Tokyo, so this list needs no guessing: the twelve-metre head on the roof of the Shinjuku Toho Building, the manhole covers on the pavement below it, the Shin Godzilla statue in the square outside Toho's head office in Hibiya — where Yurakucho Marion, which the films destroy, is still standing across the road — and forty metres of Godzilla in the departure lobby at Haneda Terminal 3, which is either the first or the last thing you see in Japan. Shinjuku made him a resident in 2015 and its tourism ambassador, which is a thing a ward can apparently do.

Godzilla monument, Haneda airport terminal 3
Toho's map gives this one as roughly forty metres long, in the departure lobby of Haneda's international terminal, with a second statue and a wall of monsters on the floor above. It is the largest thing on this list by a distance, and depending on your itinerary it is either the first or the last thing you see in Japan.

- Getting there
- Tokyo Monorail or Keikyu, Haneda Airport Terminal 3
Terminal 3 at Haneda, on the monorail or the Keikyu line. The departure lobby is before security, so you do not need a boarding pass to stand under it.
Rules of its own. An airport departure hall: people here are catching flights. Photograph it from the side of the concourse rather than the middle, and keep clear of the check-in queues.

Godzilla Head, Shinjuku Toho Building
Twelve metres of Godzilla looking over Kabukicho from the eighth floor of the Shinjuku Toho Building, on the site of the old Koma Theatre. Toho's own page says he roars and lights up once an hour between 12:00 and 20:00, which is the reason to time the visit rather than just pass by.
- Address
- 東京都新宿区歌舞伎町1-19-1 新宿東宝ビル
- Getting there
- JR Shinjuku, east exit, about 5 min on foot into Kabukicho
Five minutes from the east exit of Shinjuku station. The head is meant to be seen from the street below, on Central Road, and it is free from there — and while you are looking up, the pavement in front of the building has cast iron drain covers with Godzilla on them, from two of the films, part of a Tokyo-wide scheme of manhole covers drawn from anime and manga.
Rules of its own. The terrace beside the head is part of a working hotel, and the hotel's notice says visitors are not being admitted to it for the time being. So this is a look from the pavement, not a walk up: do not go through the lobby expecting access, and keep out of the way of guests.

Godzilla Interception Operation, Nijigen no Mori
A full-size Godzilla, which the park gives as about 120 metres and the largest in the world, lying in a forest on Awaji island since the summer of 2020. Visitors are enrolled in the National Godzilla Awaji Island Research Center and go down a zipline into the body. Everything else on this list is a statue you look at; this is the one you go inside.
- Address
- 兵庫県淡路市楠本2425-2 兵庫県立淡路島公園 ニジゲンノモリ内
- Getting there
- By bus from Kobe or Shin-Kobe to Awaji IC, about 45 min from Sannomiya
In the Hyogo prefectural Awaji Island Park, about 45 minutes by bus from Sannomiya. Ticketed, and the zipline has its own conditions worth reading before the trip.
Rules of its own. A paid attraction with an aerial ride in it, so there are height, weight and health conditions, and they are the park's rather than ours. Read them before travelling to an island.

Godzilla statue, Hibiya Godzilla Square
The square outside Toho's head office, with a statue based on the Shin Godzilla of 2016 — it replaced the one made for the fortieth anniversary in 1995, which moved upstairs into the cinema. The point of standing here is the view across the road: Yurakucho Marion and its neighbours are buildings the films flatten, and they are still there.
- Address
- 東京都千代田区有楽町1丁目2-2
- Getting there
- Tokyo Metro Hibiya, at Hibiya Chanter
At Hibiya Chanter, by Hibiya station, in the open and free at any hour.

How this list is made
A place is listed when the work, its publisher or the town's own tourism page names it, and the page it was read on is linked with the date it was read. Positions come from OpenStreetMap or from the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan, never from Google.
We never show a frame of a work beside a photograph of a place. The scene is described in words instead, which is also the version a screen reader and three languages can use. How we check and rank, in full.
