Shotaro Ishinomori: the real places

Kamen Rider, Cyborg 009 and about five hundred other titles, by a man from Miyagi who drew more published pages than anyone in the world. Ishinomaki is where the prefecture put the museum, on an island in the river, and it turned the kilometre of street leading to it into a manga road with his characters standing along it. Two things to know before going: it is two and a half hours from Tokyo, so this is a day rather than a detour, and the museum has closures planned through 2026 and 2027 while the third floor is rebuilt. Also worth knowing quietly — the island the museum sits on was under the 2011 tsunami, and the building reopened in 2012.

3 places

  1. Statue

    Rider V3, Ishinomaki city hall

Rider V3 outside the city hall, which the city names as the start of the manga road. A statue in front of the building where people renew their residence certificates is the whole idea of this category in one image.

    Address
    宮城県石巻市 石巻市庁舎前(マンガロード起点)
    Getting there
JR Ishinomaki, about 5 min on foot

Five minutes from the station, at the top of the road: start here and walk down to the museum rather than the other way round.

  2. Street

    Ishinomaki manga road

About a kilometre of street between the city hall and the museum, with his characters standing along it — Cyborg 009 among them — and murals by graffiti artists on the walls between. The city describes it as running from Rider V3 at one end to Sea Jetter Kaito at the other, which is as good a set of directions as any.

    Address
    宮城県石巻市(市庁舎から石ノ森萬画館までの約1キロメートル)
    Getting there
JR Ishinomaki, the road runs from the station side to the museum

It is the walk from the station to the museum, so you do it whether you meant to or not. Outdoors and free.

  3. Museum · Rules of its own

    Ishinomori Mangattan Museum

A round white building on Nakase, the island in the Kitakami, holding original artwork, the Heisei Rider masks, a transformation attraction and an original film shown nowhere else. The city's own page lists it as its museum rather than as a licence shop, which is the right way round.

    Address
    宮城県石巻市中瀬2番7号
    Getting there
JR Ishinomaki, about 12 min on foot down the manga road

Twelve minutes on foot from Ishinomaki station, along the manga road. The city gives admission from 20 March 2026 as 1,300 yen for adults, 600 for secondary pupils, 400 for primary, free below.

Rules of its own. Closures are planned across 2026 and 2027 while the third floor is rebuilt — check the museum's own dates before committing a day and a two-and-a-half-hour journey to it. A museum of original pages, so its rules on photography apply inside.

How this list is made

A place is listed when the work, its publisher or the town's own tourism page names it, and the page it was read on is linked with the date it was read. Positions come from OpenStreetMap or from the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan, never from Google.

We never show a frame of a work beside a photograph of a place. The scene is described in words instead, which is also the version a screen reader and three languages can use. How we check and rank, in full.
