Attack on Titan: the real places

Hajime Isayama grew up in Oyama, in the hills of Hita, and the dam above the village is ninety-four metres of concrete wall. In November 2020 the city put Eren, Mikasa and Armin at the foot of it, as children, looking up — which turns the dam into the Wall and the visitor into the fourth person in the scene. It is the best-composed monument of its kind in Japan, because the thing it needs was already there. Hita added a Levi statue outside its station the following spring, so the visit is two stops: the station square, then the twenty minutes up the valley.

  1. Statue · Rules of its own

Eren, Mikasa and Armin, Oyama dam

Three children at the foot of a ninety-four metre dam wall, looking up: the first volume's scene, with the concrete standing in for the Wall. Hita, where Hajime Isayama grew up, unveiled it on 8 November 2020 with the author present. Standing behind the statues puts you where the reader was — which is the whole composition, and it needs no image of the work to land.

    Address
    大分県日田市大山町 大山ダム下流広場
    Getting there
By car, about 25 min from JR Hita station

The downstream plaza of a working dam, about twenty-five minutes by car from Hita station; the city's own page is where the statue is documented.

Rules of its own. An operating dam, not a park. Keep to the downstream plaza and the marked paths, do not climb anything, and leave the release channels alone.

  2. Statue

    Levi statue, Hita station

The captain, on the south plaza of Hita station, finished in the spring after the dam statues. It makes the visit a pair: arrive by train, see this one on the way out of the barrier, then take the valley road up to the three children under the wall.

    Address
    大分県日田市元町 JR日田駅南側広場
    Getting there
JR Kyudai line, Hita, at the station

In the station plaza, so it costs nothing and needs no detour if you are already changing trains at Hita.

  3. Museum · Rules of its own

Attack on Titan in HITA museum ANNEX

The second room, opened later and not in the village but inside the grounds of the Sapporo brewery at Takase — which is an unlikely address for it and works, because the site had the space. Reproductions of the artwork from all thirty-four volumes with the author's own choices and comments, his childhood photographs, and wall-sized collages, captioned in more than one language.

    Address
    大分県日田市大字高瀬6979番地(サッポロビール九州日田工場敷地内)
    Getting there
By car, about 15 min from JR Hita station

The tourism association's page gives 10:00 to 19:00, 700 yen for adults and free under 18, in the brewery's grounds rather than in Oyama.

Rules of its own. You are inside a working brewery's grounds. Follow the site's signage, park where it says to, and keep to the museum rather than wandering the works.

  4. Museum · Rules of its own

Attack on Titan in HITA museum

The museum in Isayama's own village, inside the roadside station at Nishi-Oyama, ten minutes from the dam. It is the honest answer to the thing this site will not do: rather than print a frame of the work beside a photograph, come here and look at the pages themselves, next to the drawings he made as a child in this valley.

    Address
    大分県日田市大山町西大山4106 道の駅 水辺の郷おおやま内
    Getting there
By car, about 20 min from JR Hita station, on the way to the dam

The city's page gives 9:30 to 16:00 on weekdays and 9:00 to 17:00 otherwise, 500 yen for adults and free under 18, with closing days following the roadside station's own.

Rules of its own. A museum with original artwork in it, so its own rules on photography and on touching apply, and they are posted at the door rather than here. Ask at the desk before pointing a camera at anything.

  5. Park · Rules of its own

Attack on Titan: THE NIGHT WALK, Nijigen no Mori

A 1.2 km walk through a forest after dark, as a new recruit of the Survey Corps, with wooden titans standing among the trees, projection mapping and sound. A colossal titan is somewhere in it and finding it is the point. The far end of this work from the dam at Hita: one is a monument that stays still, the other is a night in a wood.

    Address
    兵庫県淡路市楠本2425-2 兵庫県立淡路島公園 ニジゲンノモリ内
    Getting there
By bus from Kobe or Shin-Kobe to Awaji IC, about 45 min from Sannomiya

In the Hyogo prefectural Awaji Island Park, about 45 minutes by bus from Sannomiya, and it runs after dark rather than during the day.

Rules of its own. The park's own page warns that the route has real climbs and descents and to watch your footing, in a forest, at night. Sensible shoes, and it is not the walk to do carrying luggage.

How this list is made

A place is listed when the work, its publisher or the town's own tourism page names it, and the page it was read on is linked with the date it was read. Positions come from OpenStreetMap or from the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan, never from Google.

We never show a frame of a work beside a photograph of a place. The scene is described in words instead, which is also the version a screen reader and three languages can use. How we check and rank, in full.
