Captain Tsubasa: the real places

Yoichi Takahashi grew up in Katsushika, and the ward put nine bronze statues of his characters across the Yotsugi and Tateishi neighbourhoods, with the author supervising. Three are life-size. Keisei then redecorated Yotsugi station around them, so the pilgrimage starts the moment the train doors open rather than after a walk. The ward publishes the map itself and hands it out at the station, which makes this the easiest set on this site to do properly: an afternoon, one ticket, flat ground, and a residential quarter of east Tokyo most visitors never see. The statues stand in parks, beside a post office and outside a high school — real streets where people live, which is the whole texture of the thing and also the reason to walk quietly.

3 places

  1. School · Someone lives or works here

Life-size Tsubasa, by the gate of Minamikatsushika high school

One of the three life-size statues, beside the main gate of a metropolitan high school — the ward's own page gives the address. The siting is the joke and the point at once: a school football story, at a school.

    Address
    東京都葛飾区立石6丁目4番1号
    Getting there
Keisei line, Aoto or Tateishi, about 10 min on foot

About ten minutes on foot from Aoto or Tateishi. The statue is at the gate, on the pavement side, so you never need to go in.

Someone lives or works here. This is a working school with teenagers in it. Stay on the pavement, do not go through the gate, do not photograph students or into the grounds, and think about the hour: arriving at the start or end of a school day means standing in a crowd of pupils with a camera, which is not a thing to do.

  2. Park

    Kojiro Hyuga, Yotsugi park

Hyuga in a neighbourhood park a few minutes from the station: a small statue rather than one of the life-size three, in the kind of park where local children actually play football. The ward lists it at this street number, which is how you find it — there is no signage from the main road.

    Address
    東京都葛飾区四つ木1丁目16番24号
    Getting there
Keisei Oshiage line, Yotsugi, about 5 min on foot

Five minutes on foot from Yotsugi station, and on the way to the other Yotsugi statues.

  3. Station · Rules of its own

Yotsugi station and its station-front pocket park

Keisei decorated the station around the work, so the walls announce it before you reach the street, and the pocket park outside holds the Ishizaki statue. This is where the ward's printed map is handed out, which is the reason to start here rather than at whichever statue is nearest your hotel.

    Address
    東京都葛飾区東四つ木4丁目15番10号先(四ツ木駅前ポケットパーク)
    Getting there
Keisei Oshiage line, Yotsugi, at the station

Yotsugi is on the Keisei Oshiage line, about fifteen minutes from Oshiage and the Skytree. Every statue on this page is within a half-hour walk of it.

Rules of its own. A working commuter station on a two-track line. Photograph the concourse and the pocket park, stay off the platform edge, and step aside at the ticket gates — this is a station people are late through.

How this list is made

A place is listed when the work, its publisher or the town's own tourism page names it, and the page it was read on is linked with the date it was read. Positions come from OpenStreetMap or from the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan, never from Google.

We never show a frame of a work beside a photograph of a place. The scene is described in words instead, which is also the version a screen reader and three languages can use. How we check and rank, in full.
