Pop-ups and events in Tokyo
Tokyo runs on short seasons. A collaboration café takes a floor for a fortnight and hands it to the next series; a pop-up opens inside a department store for three weeks and is gone; a convention fills a hall at Makuhari or Odaiba for three days at the end of the year. What is below is what has been announced on an official page, with the day each entry was last read, and an event that has finished disappears from this list on its own. It is not everything that exists — only what can be checked.

Tax-free changes: you pay the tax and are refunded at the airport

Until 31 October a tax-free shop takes the 10% consumption tax off at the till. From this date you pay the full price and are refunded after customs confirms your purchases at the airport, within 90 days. The ¥5,000 minimum per shop per day stays, the sealed-bag rule and the split between general and consumable goods go. Bring your passport to every purchase, as before, and leave time at the airport you did not need to leave before.

Three weeks on the eighth floor of Yurakucho Marui for Yukari Ichijo's shojo manga, running from 1981. Open 11:00 to 20:00, last entry half an hour before closing, and shut over the new year from 31 December to 3 January — which is what most of Tokyo does. A Kyoto run follows in February, so Kansai readers have their own dates.

It is a self-published works fair, not a trade show: tens of thousands of circles selling what they made themselves, and the queue is part of it. Entry is by paid wristband bought in advance, and the halls are at their fullest on the first morning.
