Kochikame: the real places

Forty years of weekly serialisation about a police box in Kameari, written by Osamu Akimoto, who is from Kameari. The ward answered with fifteen bronzes around the station — Ryo-san saluting, Ryo-san in festival dress, Ryo-san dancing samba, and the others — so the walk is a few hundred metres and the statues are the street furniture. Kameari is twenty minutes from Ueno on the Joban line and is not a tourist district in any other sense, which is exactly why it reads as the manga did: an ordinary neighbourhood that happens to have been drawn every week for four decades.

3 places

  1. Statue

    Ryo-san, Kameari station north exit

The first of the fifteen, in the square outside the north exit, and the one every photograph of Kameari has in it. The ward's map is handed out just inside the station, so the statue and the route both start here.

    Address
    東京都葛飾区亀有5-33(亀有駅北口)
    Getting there
JR Joban line, Kameari, at the station

Kameari is on the JR Joban local line, about twenty minutes from Ueno. Everything on this page is within a few hundred metres of the station.

  2. Statue

Ryo-san, Nakagawa and Reiko, Kameari south exit

The three of them together on the south side — the only group in the set, and the one that makes the joke land: a police box comedy greeting you at the exit of the station it was named after.

    Address
    東京都葛飾区亀有3-26(亀有駅南口)
    Getting there
JR Joban line, Kameari, at the south exit

South exit, so a different side from the north-exit Ryo-san; the two are a two-minute walk apart through the station.

  3. Shrine · Rules of its own

“Aiming for that star” Ryo-san, Kameari Katori shrine

A statue of Ryo-san inside the grounds of the neighbourhood shrine, which the ward lists among the fifteen. The shrine is a sports shrine — people come here to pray before matches and exams — so the two things standing in the same courtyard are less of a collision than they look.

    Address
    東京都葛飾区亀有3-42-24
    Getting there
JR Joban line, Kameari, about 5 min on foot

About five minutes on foot from Kameari station, and the grounds are open and free.

Rules of its own. An active shrine before it is anything else. Bow at the gate, keep off the centre of the path, do not photograph anyone at prayer, and treat the statue as something standing in someone's place of worship — because it is.

How this list is made

A place is listed when the work, its publisher or the town's own tourism page names it, and the page it was read on is linked with the date it was read. Positions come from OpenStreetMap or from the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan, never from Google.

We never show a frame of a work beside a photograph of a place. The scene is described in words instead, which is also the version a screen reader and three languages can use. How we check and rank, in full.
